When I moved to NYC in 2014, it was february and I had 2 luggage with me.

I had to fit enough clothes and shoes for 4 seasons. Ok, maybe I am exagerating… It wasn’t so painful as I was already imagining to buy a new wardrobe in the Big Apple!

In reality, I came as an intern with a monthly salary of $1,200 and I also needed to pay the rent in a shared apartment.
So I did stay minimal for a while, no budget available for shopping!

What is a minimalist wardrobe?

The basic idea is that you have only 35-40 items in your closet at any one time, then switch out a few items at each change of season.

What is the purpose of a minimalist wardrobe?

Well, there are many reasons:
– keep your closet organized and clean so that you see all your items at once
– make the mixing/combinations easier
– cut the time of chosing what to wear
– pack more efficiently when you travel
– save the planet, being environmental friendly
– keep your weight steady (no margin for getting fat there 😉
– And of course, keep your spending in control !

Which are the best clothes for a minimalist wardrobe?

Of course, you need to choose your clothes according to your lifestyle.
The dress code of my office for example is casual professional: it means that I don’t need to wear a suit everytime but I can’t use jeans and flip flops.

Remember not to cheat: 30-40 items include all the outfits for the office and for the spare time.
These are the items that I mix together to create work look:
– 5 pants with a very clean cut
– 3 shirts
– 3 top/t-shirts
When I need to be more elegant, I put on a suit jacket or a blazer. I have 5. For the events, I prefer dresses: same magic number, I have 5 of them!
With this 21 items I can create more than 40 different looks.

Spare time items count:
– 2 pairs of jeans
– 2 pairs of legging
– 3 sweaters
– another couple of more informal t-shirts
I am very simple in the week-end: no fashion runaways for me 😉
