I always have been workholic (raise hand who isn’t!) and I still am, even now that I am a mom.
When I was in my 20s, in Italy, with my first daily job as an export sale person, I enjoyed having multiple side hustles: my goal was to save enough money to buy an apartment as soon as possible.

Today, most of the opportunities to make money are online. But in that moment, the earnings were in the “hard work”, the manual one, the one where you trade time for a fair payment. Somehow I still like those jobs really much, mostly because of the great memories I have of those days and also because of what I learn in those experiences.

I am sharing with you these hustles because they built some great skills, they are a lot of fun and if you have some spare time, you can still take advantage of them while being a mom.

Bartending

To avoid confusion, bartending in Italy is not just in nightclub. Bars are open from 6 AM to 12 AM and throughout the whole day, you serve breakfast (lots of cappuccinos!), light lunch, aperitifs, and then cocktails in the evening.
In Italy the bartender is like a friend and it helped me a lot to go back to my local reality and meet new people after I came back from almost one year travelling abroad.
Of all the side hustles in this article, bartending is the only one that is not mom-appropriate 🙂 unless you have a coffee shop close home and you can make few hours here and there. Plus as I said, the american system is a little different and you don’t have much time to interact with clients.
What you can learn:
Bartending teaches you a lot about the organization of the work and the importance of customer service: remembering the orders of the usual clients, understanding the mood of the person you have in front of you, making the extra step when it is needed are very useful skills that can be a plus in any other job you can have.

Writing in a magazine

I have been a journalist for almost 10 year, writing is something that I can’t live without (here I am blogging again!)
It is doable anywhere and in any time. My suggestion is to actually go and apply for being a contributor in a printed magazine or in a digital magazine. First very important thing: you must receive a compensation.
Working for free doesn’t apply.
Second important thing: you must have interactions with people and not just write for the sake of it. Why? Because the trick is to learn what people want to read and don’t be caught in the mistake of writing what it is interesting just for you.
Third, and maybe the most important: you must have an editor that assign you articles and that approves what you write.
What you can learn:
First of all, you actually learn how to write.
In my experience, my editor was very hard on the journalists, he didn’t have time to waste. He was making us write and re-write the same piece many times till we didn’t get to the point. He pushed us to always find the news: with no news, there is no article.
Secondly, you learn what people want to read, you learn how to approach people, how to ask them questions, how to listen to their answers.
This is essential to be successful also in the business world.

Tutoring

I was tutoring English, German and Math. Mostly for junior high students and some in high school. You can really make good money with little effort: I loved it!
This is one of the side hustle that is so approachable to all of us and we all have the advantage of knowing the one of the most requested language: English.
What you can learn:
Tutoring teaches you how to explain to other, somehow also how to give directions or orders. Of course, it teaches you how to define your strenghts to take advantage of them. And you will acquire a lot of patience in doing it!
If you do it in the real world, it will teach you some entrepreneurial skills in the negotiation: it is a job where you can be in the position of deciding the price.
